"I'LL DO IT!!!" Says John Candy in one of my favorite scenes in one of my favorite movies of all time, "Stripes".
Candy is sitting in a strip joint with his rag-tag band of army buddies, who have just convinced him to get into the mud wrestling ring with a trio of beautiful, athletic and scantily clad women.
I guess it's the 14 year old adolescent in me who enjoyed seeing a big, overconfident goof get his ass handed to him by a few beautiful women who if you put them all together didn't appear to outweigh him.
I laugh whenever I see this and the same thing happened to John Hawkins at Right Wing News.
There's this attitude out there, a perception, that there's something wrong with beautiful women using their looks to draw readers. The idea is supposed to be that it's all about their brains, it's all about their writing, that it's cheap or improper for them to have guys checking out their web pages just to ogle them.
That's bullcrap.
I can almost picture Candy yelling "I'll do it!", and climbing into the ring in his boxers and baggy t-shirt :)
Traffic (hits) are the currency of the blogosphere. If you serve ads, then this might even translate into real currency. If you specifically use your looks to acquire currency... well... Draw your own conclusions.
That having been said, I don't believe that there is anything wrong with a beautiful woman posting her picture on her weblog. I've also come to the the conclusion that conservative lady bloggers are among the best looking in the blogosphere. Does that detract from their commentary? No way. Do I go to their blogs specifically to ogle them? Nope. Do I appreciate the good Lord's creative work in a well assembled woman? You bet.
When a woman consciously makes her blog about her looks, possibly posting provocative pics, it does indeed detract from her commentary, because that's what she has made it about on purpose. It stops being about her commentary and becomes about her looks.
Now for the match... Remember: "No poking in the eyes".
I don’t know why I bother with this *bleep*. You know, I don’t plaster my *bleep*ing mugshot all over this blog because I don’t want the kind of readers that only come here for the *bleep*ing human decoration. I suppose if I were a whore, as apparently women are expected to be, I would use my face and body for a payoff. But I don’t. Maybe that’s acceptable in your world, but it isn’t in mine.
POIK!!!!
..."And no grabbing the nose"...
Most women know what 'that kind of traffic' means, but apparently all men don't.
You see most of us have been gawked at and drooled over in real life and find some relief from that superficial attention on the internet. We know when men are listening to what we say and when they are just pretending to listen as a way to convince us they are 'sensitive' or interested in us on more than one level.
And frankly, when the reason for the attention is so obvious it gives us the creeps. Seriously.
*Grab, squeeze, SMACK!*
..."And no grabbing ears and pulling them"...
Attitudes like the John Hawkins of the blogosphere makes me NOT want to blog politically, or seriously, because it is quite obvious that most people won't listen to what a female blogger has to say, apparently we are just good for the titty shot. Whatever. You know I'm not going to quit. I'm just getting started.
*Grab, YANK!*
..."And no kicking in the balls"...
Hyperbole. It’s a word. Look it up, Hawkins.
You didn’t disagree with “them,” you disagreed with “her.” I smacked you because a) you’re an insufferable assclown who thinks his *bleep* don’t stink, and b) Beth is my best friend.
I’m all for high-minded dialogue. Once I see evidence you’re capable of doing something other than slobbering over blog-titties, I might engage you in it.
But for now, all you get are foul-mouthed beatdowns. Because, well, I’m an *bleep*, and that’s just how we act sometimes.
*C-R-A-C-K!!!*
That wasn't one of the ladies, that was Vinnie. I'm posting it because it's the nature of a manly man to come to the defense of a lady when they are insulted. Neo-feminists have a problem with this, but the ladies don't. They are happy to have the assistance from the competent menfolk.
